Association Internationale d’Épigraphie Grecque et Latine (AIEGL)

"The Association Internationale d’Épigraphie Grecque et Latine, founded in 1978, is the international organisation that promotes the study of inscriptions in the Classical World. Its main purpose is to promote communication and co-operation among students and scholars of epigraphy throughout the world. Every five years it sponsors the International Epigraphic Congress, next to be held in Berlin in 2012, and it acts as patron to several other academic meetings and conferences. It offers prizes for outstanding work by younger scholars and provides financial support for specialised training in the subject.Epigraphy is the scientific investigation and study of inscriptions. These documents from the past are preserved on a variety of materials, especially on metal and stone. They provide direct contemporary evidence and are thus of great important for historical research, for they provide an indispensable source of knowledge about the political institutions and the everyday life of the Greeks and Romans. This web-site provides information about the activities of the Association, about membership, and about current epigraphic events."
