GARY EDWARDS COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS OF GREECE 1839-1959 (Finding Aid)

"Gary Edwards'' collection represents one of the most comprehensive assemblages of early photographs of Greece in institutional or private hands. It contains 878 photographs, 168 glass diapositives (lantern slides), three photographically-illustrated books and fourteen publications on early photography. Almost three-quarters of the photographs are large-format prints, varying in size from 6 x 8 to 18 x 24 inches. The images range in date from 1839 to the early 20th-century. The particular strengths of the collection lie in the early date and rarity of many of the large-format photographs, the breadth of classical architecture represented and the variety of photographers who took the images. It is a rich resource for scholarly research in the art, architecture, archaeology and ethnography of Greece as well as the history of photography."
