"This is one of the well laid-out and excellently published volumes of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago. It gives a clear and full account of the results of a joint field-expedition of the Institute and the University Museum of Philadelphia during the three campaigns of 1948–1952. The Temple of Enlil, northeast of the massive ziggurat, seems to have been built by Urnammu (of the Third Dynasty of Ur); its plan, on the whole, did not change throughout its existence, which apparently included the Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian periods. One feature that deserves special mention concerns the arrangements for family worship in the private houses of the Scribal Quarter; clear evidence that such private chapels existed was found only in levels belonging to the Ur III period and the early Isin-Larsa period which followed."
