" The proto-Elamite material offers a unique opportunity to survey the early development of a pristine, or at least only partially derivative writing system. Albeit unquestionably inspired by the slightly earlier writing system of southern Mesopotamia conventionally called proto-cuneiform, proto-Elamite exhibits a high degree of independent development of both sign repertoire and text structure.
