"The Department was founded on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Institute in 1929, but it had predecessors that served as stations for excavations conducted on the western coast. Since 1989, the department has been accommodated in a portion of the building that once served as the German embassy. Its field of research includes projects ranging from prehistoric Asia Minor and Thrace to the Ottoman period."
